Tips for Achieving Realistic Textures

I’ve been diving deep into 3D modeling and am really struggling with creating realistic textures for my projects — lately, I’ve been experimenting with Substance Painter, and it’s been eye-opening in terms of detail. I’d love to hear what techniques or tools you guys use to make your materials stand out.

I’ve had great success using height maps to add depth to my textures. If you’re in Substance Painter, try layering different texture maps and adjusting their blending modes to achieve a more realistic look. The key is subtlety — too much can make it feel artificial. Have you considered experimenting with custom brushes too?

Using Substance Painter, I found that fine-tuning the roughness and metallic maps drastically changed the surface feel of the textures. It’s crazy how much those subtle adjustments can enhance realism. If you haven’t tried layering several base textures and tweaking their scale, you should definitely give it a shot. @matthew31, what do you think about combining various textures for more depth?
